Sonali Bendre's Son Encourages Her In Cancer Battle; Her New Post On Instagram

Last month, Sonali Bendre revealed that she had cancer. Since then, countless followers and the whole Bollywood movie industry have sent her encouragement in support of her battle. But apart from these supporters, the actress is drawing strength from one special person. And this special person is her 12-year-old son Ranveer Behl. Despite the outpouring of support, a debate is now raging about how correct withholding information from family is or is it okay to tell them the hard and often painful truth.

Sonali’s Journey So Far...

It all began when Sonali, who is being treated in New York, shared a post on Instagram. It showed the mother-son duo together – truly parent-child relationship goals! The picture uncovers a new bold and beautiful look for the actress and her positive approach towards life. In the post, Sonali expressed her feelings about her kid being her pillar of strength.

Withholding Information From Family: Good or Bad?

In some cases, it becomes tough for the person who is suffering from the illness to decide: Should she withhold the information from the family or go ahead with disclosing the harsh reality? The actress and her husband Goldie Behl mustered up the strength to go ahead and disclose the news to their son, which truly, is a positive step in her battle. It’s the 12 year-old who has now become her source of happiness as he supports her in dealing with the Big C!

From the moment he was born 12 years, 11 months and 8 days ago, my amazing @rockbehl took ownership of my heart. From then on, his happiness and wellbeing have been the centre of anything @goldiebehl and I ever did. And so, when the Big C reared its ugly head, our biggest dilemma was what and how we were going to tell him. As much as we wanted to protect him, we knew it was important to tell him the full facts. We’ve always been open and honest with him and this time it wasn’t going to be different. He took the news so maturely… and instantly became a source of strength and positivity for me. In some situations now, he even reverses roles and takes on being the parent, reminding me of things I need to do! I believe that it’s imperative to keep kids involved in a situation like this. They are a lot more resilient than we give them credit for. It’s important to spend time with them and include them, rather than make them wait on the side-lines, not being told yet instinctively knowing everything. In our effort to protect them from the pain and realities of life, we might end up doing the opposite. I’m spending time with Ranveer right now, while he’s on summer vacation. His madness and shenanigans help me #SwitchOnTheSunshine. And today, we derive strength from each other #OneDayAtATimeA post shared by Sonali Bendre (@iamsonalibendre) on

In the post, the actress said, “From the moment he was born 12 years, 11 months and 8 days ago, my amazing @rockbehl took ownership of my heart. From then on, his happiness and wellbeing have been the centre of anything @goldiebehl and I ever did.”

Just like other parents Sonali and her husband had the fear of breaking the news to their little son. She continued, “When the Big C reared its ugly head, our biggest dilemma was what and how we were going to tell him. As much as we wanted to protect him, we knew it was important to tell him the full facts. We’ve always been open and honest with him and this time it wasn’t going to be different.”

Sonali’s Son’s Reaction:

The actress also shared her son’s reaction on this. She wrote, “He took the news so maturely… and instantly became a source of strength and positivity for me. In some situations now, he even reverses roles and takes on being the parent, reminding me of things I need to do!”

She also expressed her opinion of involving the kids in such circumstances rather than hiding the truth from them. She said, “I believe that it’s imperative to keep kids involved in a situation like this. They are a lot more resilient than we give them credit for. It’s important to spend time with them and include them, rather than make them wait on the side-lines, not being told yet instinctively knowing everything. In our effort to protect them from the pain and realities of life, we might end up doing the opposite.”

While Sonali is being treated in New York, she is also happy to spend time with her son while his summer vacations are going on. She wrote, “I’m spending time with Ranveer right now, while he’s on summer vacation. His madness and shenanigans help me #SwitchOnTheSunshine. And today, we derive strength from each other #OneDayAtATime.”

The actress, who is taking the help of the social media to tell the world about her struggle with the disease, definitely gives us an optimistic approach towards life!

How to Tell Your Child About Your Illness:

  1. Understand the gravity of your illness. Before breaking any news to your child, it is important that you yourself have accepted the situation.
  2. Your child’s age should also be taken into consideration. If your child is too young to even understand, then it’s best not to reveal details that will confuse them further.
  3. Make sure both the parents are together when you talk to your child.
  4. It is very important to consider comfort while having such discussions. Avoid having the talk in public spaces and/or hospitals.
  5. Get your child confidence that everything will be ok. Tell him there might be a slight change in daily routines. Get him mentally prepared for the changes that will take place in their lives.
