Winter is coming! And yes, in cities where people suffer in the humid weather more than the actual heat, will now start getting bothered by dry skin and scalp. Worry not, there is always a way out of saving yourself from weather's drastic impacts on your body.
Once winter is about to kick in, you will suddenly see the Ads on the television changing and even if you don't want you, you would end up memorizing the brands of cold creams and anti-dandruff shampoos. But there are a few basics that one should be aware of, especially for your child's tender skin.
What are the most common symptoms associated with dryness?
Our scalp contains sebaceous glands which produce oil to maintain the scalp moisturized. Various factors may affect the production of oil which leads to dryness in the scalp.
Dry itchy skin and scalp are very common during winters. But when the skin or scalp starts flaking, it not only is a cosmetic worry but a health concern as well.
With home remedies and regular medicated solutions, if the condition doesn't improve, it is better to consult a doctor to rule out other skin infections that need a separate treatment altogether.
What is the difference between Dry Skin/Scalp and Dandruff?
Dry scalp is not a medical issue, it is just basically dryness caused due to diet, weather or excessive use of shampoo. Similarly, dry skin is the lack of hydration in the body, caused due to less consumption of liquids/ water or change in weather.
General hydration internally and externally helps solve dry skin and scalp. Eat a well-rounded diet for your overall health. A dry scalp doesn't mean you're lacking any particular nutrient, though.
Whereas dandruff is a that of a medical concern and needs usually certain medicated solutions to be used to get it treated. But there are other factors that may cause to worsen. Stress, season change and not frequently washing your hair can worsen the dandruff issue.
"We may see associations but we can't say that, for example, vitamin D deficiency from lack of sunlight in winter causes dandruff," says Benabio, a dermatologist with Kaiser Permanente in San Diego as mentioned in Webmed.
