There is nothing more heart-wrenching than a wearing infant. So in order to calm a crying baby, all you need to do is stock up on a bottle, a pacifier, some soothing music, an exercise ball, a warm bath and some baby toys.
No matter how frustrated you are with your crying baby, never shake her. Just a few seconds of jostling can cause serious brain damage.
Here are a series of activities you can do to calm your crying baby:
- Check all the obvious reasons that the baby might be crying. In babies under 3 months old, crying is almost always related to a physical need. She maybe hungry or happy, wet or just plain uncomfortable. So offer a breast or bottle. Burp her, check her diaper and make sure her clothes aren't pinching.
- Offer the baby a pacifier or help her find her thumb.
- Make some soothing noises. Sing to your baby or calm her down by playing the sound of a running faucet or a radio, recording of nature sounds or white noise.
- Try movement and take her outside. Gently dance with her in your arms.
- Try sitting on a exercise ball and bounce up and down gently.
- Try massaging her belly or putting her in a warm bath.
- Change the scenery and add some colours to her crib by introducing some new toys.
Babies who cry three hours a day for at least three days per week, may probably have colic.
