Twinkle Khanna is all set to talk about menstruation in the open with ‘Padman'

Twinkle Khanna is all set to talk about menstruation in the open with ‘Padman'Twinkle Khanna is all set to talk about menstruation in the open with ‘Padman'

Twinkle's maiden production, Pad man, would be based on the life of A.Muruganantham, who is better known as the Menstrual man of India.

Twinkle Khanna is one celeb mummy we love to bits and the reason for it is her unabashed behaviour on social media platforms and I-will-not-follow-the-herd kind of attitude.

The supermum has taken a bold step again. This time she would be producing a movie that is based on the life of A Muruganantham, who is better known as the Menstrual man of India. It must be noted here that Muruganantham is the man who invented a machine to make low-cost sanitary pads for rural women. He now has taken up the mission to talk about menstruation in the open and has even given lectures at Harvard!

The film has been titled as Padman and would be directed by R Balki of Chini Kum fame. Reports say that Akshay Kumar would be essaying the role of Muruganantham.

"I am proud that for the first time in the history of world cinema a mainstream male superstar will talk about menstruation sanitary napkins in a full feature length Hindi film.a mainstream male star will talk about menstruation and sanitary napkins in a full feature length Hindi movie. The story will be set in India's heartland, but the theme is universal. In the '90s, it was taboo to talk about periods; women would not even talk to their husbands about it. Now, with this film, we are taking the debate to the public to talk about female personal hygiene," said Muruganantham to a leading daily.

Twinkle also posted the first look of the movie on Twitter. "Mrs Funnybones Movies - first production -written and directed by the brilliant Balki -Pad up and get ready": she wrote along with it.

A. Muruganantham says that Twinkle hounded him for days to procure the rights of his story as it would be a kind of an autobiography. "A girl called Twinkle (Khanna) had been chasing me endlessly for rights. She tracked my every move. She desperately tried to reach me even when I was in Malaysia and the US. She finally caught me in London. My friends were curious about why Twinkle would want to meet me. It was only then that I learnt she is Rajesh Khanna's daughter. I remember telling her, 'Akshay Kumar has also been trying to get me for rights'. She laughed and said, 'Yes, he is my husband'," says Muruganantham.

Muruganantham is very happy that Twinkle has taken up his story and spread awareness about Menstruation as it is one topic that should be declared in the open.

Continue reading on the next page to read how to talk to your kids about menstruation!

"Menstruation is an issue that women understand best, so it was easy to talk to her without elaborating how I went about creating the first set of napkins. I couldn't have done it with just two men," he adds.

We must say that we are totally on this with Twinkle on this and hope that she is successful in bringing the topic of menstruation out in the open with Padman. Still considered to be a taboo in India, it is important for not only mothers but both parents to talk about menstruation with their girls and also boys.

It is normally seen that Indian families keep menstruation under wraps and discourage their daughters to discuss it in the open. This only leads to ignorance and kids start taking it as a forbidden issue. Moreover, there are certain practices that do not allow girls having their periods to enter a temple and even the kitchen.

These are nothing but regressive practices that have no scientific backing. Here are three ways to talk about menstruation to your kids:

1.Treat it as a normal bodily function: Don't talk about it behind closed doors, but in front of your whole family to let your girls feel that it is just another bodily function and not something to be ashamed of.

2. Talk about hygiene too: Menstrual hygiene is extremely important, which is why parents should also openly talk about sanitary pads and how to use and dispose them.

3.Don't leave out the boys: Indian parents must remember that menstruation is not a gender-specific issue it is a matter that is related to reproduction and both girls and boys should know about it. It's time to break the taboo.
