Traditional home remedies to protect your kids from 5 common monsoon illnesses

Worried about your kids health in this rainy season? Read on to know about the most effective home remedies to get rid of five most common monsoon illnesses

After a few days of speculation about their exact arrival date, the monsoons are finally here. Now for the next three months, India will receive about 90 percent of its share of rainfall.

And that's good news.

But the bad news is that like always, monsoons will also bring along some illnesses. And as a parent you would need to be extra cautious, especially if your kids love the rainy season.

"The rainy season is the peak time when bacteria and germs affect many people resulting in various diseases. There are some common monsoon diseases – some are easily treated, while a few can be life threatening," explains Dr.Pankaj Aggarwal,  senior homeopath and psychologist, Agrawal Homoeo Clinic, Delhi.

Due to the moist, wet and humid climate skin infections and viral fever are the most common illnesses among children. But there are a few more that can make this weather 'not so merry,' if precautions are not taken.

Dr Aggarwal explains each of the five and suggests home remedies for the same.

Monsoon illnesses to watch out for

#1 Malaria

This is a mosquito-borne disease where one experiences fever, chills, and flu-like illness. It is one of the most common diseases during the rainy season.
"Since this disease is spread by mosquitoes, so mosquitos’ repellents and net should be used to prevent it. Make sure that water does not stagnate in your area as mosquitoes breed in stagnant water. There is also an ABCD prevention of malaria that you can follow at home," he says as he lists the basics.

  • Prompt Diagnosis and treatment

Home remedy: 

  • Tulsi leaves can be extremely beneficial in prevention of malaria at home. All you have to do is prepare a paste by mixing 11 gms of tulsi leaves with 3gms of black pepper powder. Consume this mixture daily during the cold stages of the fever.
  • Another option is to use cardamom. Mic 1tsp of powdered cinnamon to a glass of boiled water. Now add a pinch of pepper powder and 1 tsp honey. Take this everyday to bring down the temperature.

#2 Cholera

“Cholera is another deadly disease that can attack young children in this rainy weather. It is an acute diarrheal illness caused by infection of the intestine with the bacteria Vibrio Cholera. Remember that it can spread from uncooked and unwashed vegetables, raw seafood and is very common in children under the age of five years,” explains Dr Aggarwal.

He adds that one of the best preventive measure is to maintain proper hygiene and cleanliness in and around the house.

  • Wash hands with soap and water frequently.
  • Drink only safe water including bottled water or boil water. Hot beverages are generally safe, as are canned or bottled drinks, but wipe the outside before you open them.
  • Increase your fluid intake so that it washes out the toxins in the body
  • Eat food that’s completely cooked and hot and avoid street food vendor food
  • Stick to fruits and vegetables that you can peel yourself

Home remedy:

  • Ginger is a natural antibiotic and you can use it to fight infection and cure cholera at home. Just prepare a mixture of ginger and honey and give your kid 3 tsp everyday. You could also make ginger tea by adding thin slices of ginger to 1 cup of water and few black peppers, tulsi and mint leaves. Boil the ingredients for a few minutes and then strain and add some honey. You can drink this daily till you see improvement.
  • Lemon is also quite helpful in fighting cholera. Just prepare a mixture of 1/2 lemon juice and a cup of water. Add honey and salt to this mixture and give this to your kid till he feels better.

#3 Typhoid

“Typhoid is a water-borne disease, and is very common during the monsoon season. The worst part of this infection is that it can remain in the gall bladder of the patient even after it is cured,” explains Dr Aggarwal.

“As it is highly communicable disease so the patients should isolate themselves from the rest of the family,” he adds as he lists some more preventive measures.

  • Getting vaccination in advance also helps
  • The patients should get high intake of fluid to prevent dehydration.
  • Precautions should continue even after apparent recovery

Home remedy:

  • Since garlic has antibacterial properties, it would work wonders for kids who may be down with typhoid. You can give your kid two cloves of garlic on empty stomach to help rid typhoid fever symptoms. But remember to not give this to your kid if he is younger than 5 years.
  • For kids who are below the age of five, tulsi leaves work best. Add 20 tulsi leaves and 1tsp of crushed ginger to a cup of water. Bring this solution to a boil. Add 1 tsp honey and have your kid drink this two or three times a day.

#4 Stomach infection

“For young kids, this is one of the most unpleasant diseases. Stomach Infections such as gastroenteritis, cause severe vomiting and diarrhea and can lead to weakness among kids,” says Dr Aggarwal.

“The best way to keep this disease at bay is to always wash your hands properly after using the bathroom. For mothers, my advice is to also wash your hands before and after changing diapers to prevent stomach infection,” he adds.

  • Do not eat or drink foods or liquids that you suspect to be contaminated
  • Keep your cutting board clean and keep separate cutting board for meat and vegetables
  • Drink a lot of water to stay well hydrated and ensure that the water is portable.
  • Avoid consuming food, which is spicy and rich in sugar

Home remedy:

  • Again, you can use ginger for treating gastroenteritis since it has antibacterial, antiviral, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory and properties. It can also reduce the frequency of watery stools, vomiting, nausea and even abdominal cramps. So you can prepare ginger ale and have your kid drink two to three times a day.
  • You can also use hing to cure stomach infection in kids. Add hing to dal or sabzi since it also has antibacterial and anti inflammatory properties.

#5 Dengue

“It is also called breakbone fever and can easily affect infants, kids and young children. The virus does not spread directly from person to person. And, you can spot the symptoms usually between three and 10 days after being bitten. This includes high fever, headache, nausea and even swollen lymph glands,” explains Dr Aggarwal.

He adds, “The best prevention is to add a mosquito bed to the room that is not air-conditioned.”

  • Ask your children to wear long-sleeved clothes and long trousers when heading outdoors.
  • Bodies could be protected from a mosquito bite by applying insect repellent on clothes and on the exposed parts of the body
  • Have your kids spend more time in air-conditioned rooms since mosquitoes cannot survive in cooler temperatures
  • Ask your kids to avoid playing out in the open during dawn and dusk time

Home remedy:

  •  Neem leaves can be used to cure dengue fever. Since they have antibacterial properties. Steep neem leaves in water and give this brew to your kids. Yes, it will be bitter, but its benefits include increasing both blood platelet and white blood cells, two of the most dangerous side effects of dengue. This brew can also improve immune system and help your kid have his strength back in no time. You can add honey if he is unable to drink the brew at all.
  • Orange juice is another great home remedy for dengue fever. Orange has a rich mix of antioxidants and vitamins, both of which treat the secondary symptoms of dengue and also eliminate the virus. It also promotes antibodies and boosts the immune system.
