Top 10 reasons for bad behaviour in children

All children throw tantrums, talk back and break rules. After all, it is a part of growing up. However, there are times when children behave in an unusually aggressive manner, rebel beyond reason and become very defiant. Parents shouldn’t ignore these signs. Bad behaviour in children always come with an explanation and as parents, we must try and understand the underlying reason. For all you know, it could be a passing phase. But why take chances.
Communication gap between parents and children

Communication gap between parents and children

Given today’s fast-paced lifestyle, many a time, parents and children do not end up spending enough time with one another. This leads to a communication gap, so much so that parents are not even aware of what’s happening in their child’s life. This can have serious consequences. There are times when children fall in bad company and go astray and it’s too late by the time parents realise it.
Excessive parental pressure

Excessive parental pressure

Unreasonable expectations from children and excessive parental pressure can have a psychological impact on children. At times, there is so much emphasis on academics, that children do not get time to pursue extra-curricular activities of their choice. This can be detrimental to their overall development. It can even lead to stress in children and may cause them to rebel.
Exposure to inappropriate content on TV

Exposure to inappropriate content on TV

On an average, children end up watching three to four hours of television every day. However, not all content on television is appropriate for children. Many reality shows have vulgar content and abusive language. Such age-inappropriate material can have lasting effects on children. It can also provoke them to be destructive and aggressive.
Child abuse

Child abuse

Abuse, whether physical or sexual, can have serious and long-term repercussions on a child’s psyche. It can lead to extreme outcomes — the child may either go into a shell or become excessively destructive. If parents notice any such anomaly in their child’s behaviour, they must encourage their child to open up and also take professional help.
Unhealthy environment at home

Unhealthy environment at home

If the atmosphere at home is not congenial, it can lead to changes in the child’s behaviour. If parents keep fighting among themselves, the child may feel neglected and ignored. It can also give rise to insecurities in a child’s mind and lead to behavioural problems.
Changes in family structure

Changes in family structure

Parents’ divorce can sometimes scar a child emotionally and he may exhibit behavioural discrepancies. Such children often find themselves torn between both parents. Their pent-up emotions may find an outlet in the form of defiance or aggression.
Lack of sleep

Lack of sleep

Bedtime stories have given way to electronic gadgets and this has majorly impacted the sleep pattern of children. They are so lost in watching TV or playing games on mobile phones, that their sleep time is often compromised. In the short-term, such children usually become irritable, but in the long run, their behaviour is likely to change for the worse.
Unhealthy diet

Unhealthy diet

We all have heard that a healthy body leads to a healthy mind. However, we live in times where junk food is so readily available that parents find it difficult to keep a tab on the eating habits of their children. As a result, children end up consuming colas and burgers lot more than fruits and vegetables. Junk food in excess may lead to behavioural changes in children.
Lack of manners and values

Lack of manners and values

Children have impressionable minds. If parents do not inculcate the right values and teach children good manners at the right age, they will grow up to be disobedient and rebellious.
Excessive use of internet

Excessive use of internet

As much as the internet is a boon, it has its own set of flipsides as well. If used excessively, the internet becomes an unhealthy addiction. Besides, there is every possibility that your child may get exposed to inappropriate content or still worse, get cyber bullied. This may leave the child emotionally disturbed and lead to undesirable changes in his behaviour.
