Babies whether breastfed or bottle fed suck in a lot of air when they feed, which can make them colicky or gassy if it does not find a way to escape. This is why it is essential for a mother to burp a baby in-between and after feeding sessions to release the trapped air.
Burping a newborn baby allows the infant to release the air it swallows during feeding. There are several ways of burping a newborn.
- First one is the basic one which involves putting the baby in the standing position over the mother's shoulders and gently massaging/tapping your baby's back for a minute or so. However, if he doesn't burp even after 5 minutes try changing the position.
- The other effective position is by putting the baby on your lap and gently tapping his back gently.
- The last thing that you can do is lay him over your knees and tap his back.
If you're still having problems burping your child then you can bring him back and try these positions again one by one, but gently. But if you've tried all of these positions and there are still no burps, then you can work on the other end of his body.
- You can gently massage his belly in the clockwise direction for a minute or so.
- Pumping his knees into the chest gently.
- Or you can use some gas drops or gripe water for relief. However, consult your doctor before doing so.
