It’s summer holidays and officially that time of the year again, when every mum must be thinking of some magic wizardry to help keep kids creatively engaged.
Just in time single mother Sushmita Sen has given us some seriously constructive summer ideas for the entire family to follow.
Yesterday, Sush who is mum to two lovely daughters posted a video on Instagram where she along with her two daughters is seen playing a tune on piano. Sush wrote that that as a family they make music together.
She also shared that the tune her kids are practicing these days is a melody that she put together 18 years ago so that her children could bond over this music as their mom’s song.

Now when her daughters are beginning their piano classes, they chose to learn to play the tune first. Mum Sushmita wants to see her younger daughter Alisah taking the melody forward and her older daughter Renee to add lyrics and thus complete this beautiful family song for them.
While the former Miss Universe’s idea is no less than spectacular for her family, it is also serving as an inspiration for all of us out there.

According to psychologists, one of the most creative ways to help kids learn is to engage them in an activity together with the entire family. Not only it is an excellent way to bond as a family, the kids feel more accomplished if they are able to walk the learning curve along with their parents or siblings.
So, this summer season taking a cue from the Sen family here are a few family activity ideas that you can practice together with your kids.

- A family art exhibit: If your kids love to paint then how about creating a family art calendar at least once or twice every week. The idea being that during this time the entire family will come together and paint their individual canvases on a common theme chosen by each member on rotation. Towards the end of the session the family compares their artwork to see if there are any common threads of thoughts reflected in their paintings. At the end of the holiday season you can get all these paintings framed and put up on your walls as a proud family artwork project.
- Dance together: Is there a dance form that you always wanted to learn but think its too late now? Well, the kid’s holidays are just the right time to start and this time along with your kids. Whether its kathak or waltz enroll in a dance program as a family and see yourselves bond together as you sway to the tunes.
- Culinary craft: If your kids take interest in kitchen then how about taking a summer cooking class together. Look for easy dessert classes or cookie decoration lessons that you can undertake along with your kids. The only rule is that each member takes rounds to treat the family with their creation. This will be one sweet summer we tell you.
- Gardening escapades: Summertime can be a great time to have some outdoorsy fun by getting your hands dirty and planting some saplings with kids. If you have the space mark a small area in your garden as the family summer vegetable patch. Each member takes charge of one veggie and takes care to plant, water and nurture it. So mum can plant spinach and the baby can take radish or cucumbers or whatever vegetable that may work in your region. If you do not have a gardening space then just own a pot each and begin gardening. The end result – toss all the veggies together for a hearty family meal.
