Just days after concerned father Saif Ali Khan shared that he didn't want his Columbia University graduate daughter to become an actor, another famous parent has echoed the same.
This time it's the English Vinglish actor Sridevi.
Although the doting mum has been grooming her elder daughter Janhvi for her acting debut in Student of The Year 2, the concerned mother has shared an unique view about her daughter's career choice.
"It would give me greater joy to see her married"
In fact, she also shared that while she may not be on board with each of Janhvi's choices, she is supporting her daughter for a very specific reason.
"She wanted to do the film and initially, I wasn't in favour. I don't think it's a bad industry. I am a creation of this world. But, as a parent, it would give me greater joy to see her married. But her happiness matters more, and if she does well as an actress, I will be a proud mother," the English Vinglish actor told Mid-Day.
She added that while she would rather have her daughter married, she is quite involved in her career decisions.
"She is a wise girl, but she insists on our help for everything. Boneyji and I are aware of every detail of her career," shared Sridevi.
However, her opposite view of her daughter's career choice was surprising because it seemed as though Sridevi was in fact, grooming and promoting her daughters at various events.
But the actor debunks these 'myths' and says it was only because she loves spending time with them.
"Walking with my girls made me feel like a proud mother"
"Earlier, I would take them to social gatherings and premieres that I attended. But they (people) thought I was promoting Janhvi. Walking with my girls made me feel like a proud mother. But to the world, it became a reason to misunderstand me," she clarified adding that she is like her daughter's best friend.

"We are like friends. We spend a lot of time together. Our routine is always centered around each other. I have been coming home late these days because I'm busy dubbing and promoting the film. But no matter how late I get, Khushi, always welcomes me with a smile. She comes to my room as soon as I get back and we snuggle up in a quilt to watch a film together," shares Sridevi about her relationship with her two daughters.
And while she is a great friend to her girls and believes that she is teaching them important life lessons, there is one thing that makes Sridevi extremely proud.
"I was surprised to see my kid turn into a strong young woman"
"For me, they will always be kids. But they seem to have taken less after me and more after my bold screen image. Last year, when Khushi wrote a post about body shaming on Instagram, I was pleasantly surprised to see my kid turn into a strong, opinionated and sharp young woman," said Sridevi.
The actor may have been surprised by her feisty daughter's stand, but you shouldn't be if you want to raise strong and independent girls.
Apart from letting them voice their opinion, here are some of the other lessons we must teach our daughters today.
3 lessons we must teach our girls
- Don't be a damsel in distress: A girl doesn't have to be a damsel in distress. Instead, she can just be a strong damsel who doesn't need a Prince Charming to help her in distress. Enroll your daughters in self-defense classes, just as the Kumars and help them help themselves.
- Empower yourself with progressive thoughts: We must also teach our girls to not discriminate against anybody based on caste, creed, sex or religion and not in the constitutional sense. Lead by example and explain why we must respect everybody's life choices.
- Uplift other women: This is an important life-lessons we must teach our girls. As opposed to taking criticism by the same gender as negative, we must take it as constructive feedback and work to better ourselves.
