In a shocking incident, a 19-year-old student nursing student from Karnataka was admitted to the hospital in critical condition after her seniors allegedly forced her to drink toilet cleaner that contained phenyl.
According to the family, the girl had suffered verbal and physical abuse at the hands of he seniors for a number of days before this incident took place on May 9.
However, the parents informed the authorities only on Tuesday as they wanted to focus on the treatment of their child and had been asked to keep quiet.
The doctors at the hospital where the student has been admitted say that the girl's food pipe and internal organs have been badly damaged by the phenyl. They added that it is too dangerous for them to perform certain necessary surgeries on her right now and will need to wait for six months, the Times of India has reported.
The senior students who ragged her are also from Kerela. When they saw that the girl's condition was detiriorating they took them to the hospital in Gulbarga, Karnataka where she started vomiting and collapsed.
According to her relatives, the college authorities tried to hush up the incident and that the Bangalore Police have not taken any action yet.
The student’s mother has approached Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan demanding action against the senior students, say news reports.
Aswathi, who belongs to a poor family, joined the college five months ago after taking an education loan from Kerala Gramin Bank. She was being ragged from the time she joined the hostel, alleged her uncle. Her relatives also alleged that the police in Bangalore and the college authorities are yet to take any action based on their 'ragging' complaint.
