We asked a few mothers on what were some traditional baby care practices that helped them take care of their newborn baby and here’s what they had to say.

In order to be modern and ahead of our times, we as new mums often end up doing things way differently than our mothers as we feel often look for scientific reasons in each and everything we’re asked to do.

The same applies to following traditional baby care practices as well and while you should definitely not be following any popular childcare practices blindly, there are some baby care practices that are actually good for your newborn.

We asked a few mothers on what were some traditional baby care practices that helped them take care and bond with their newborn baby and here’s what they had to say:

1. Keeping the infant at home for the first 40 days:

There has been a lot of debate on the 40-day confinement period that many new mothers do not wish to follow. However, there are many who believe that keeping the baby at home, of course barring the first few doctor and vaccination visits, actually shield the baby from all the infections and seasonal illnesses.

“I mostly kept my baby home for the first two months and found those months very helpful as I had a premature baby and she needed some time to be as strong as newborns of her age,” says Archana Kumar, mother of 6-month-old baby girl Suhana.

2. Gentle massage for your baby:

While you should not be hiring a maalishwalee to massage your newborn like a wrestler, gentle, light massage done by the mother helps the baby bond with the mother and enhances his growth as well, says science.

Not only does it increase the bonding time of the mother and the baby, it also leads to sensory stimulation and boosts the overall health of the baby.

The magic of a mother's touch is one of the most important experiences for your baby’s development. Science says that routine touch and massage by a parent or loving caregiver are critical to a baby’s growth, communication, and learning.

"Massage and exercise both are very good for the baby. Give a light sunbath after the massage which is good for vitamin D and also helps babies sleep soundly and helps them relax. That's what my experience says," says Madhavi Cholera.

3. Colic and gas remedies:

"I had a problem dealing with my newborn's colic, but there was this one remedy that worked for me almost instantly and like magic! Heeng (asafoetida) application on navel area to provide relief from gas. Just dilute a teaspoon of heeng in warm water and apply around the navel area. Tried this for both kids!, "says Poonam Joshi Lohia.

Poonam is not alone. Hundreds of Indian mothers have found this remedy to be effective and it also finds a mention in Ayurveda for treating infant colic. Of course, you must consult your doctor before use, especially if your baby has extremely sensitive skin.

Mommy Meenu Garg, however, uses Janam ghutti to treat her baby's colic and gas issues and says that they have been helpful for her. In fact, it also helped her get rid of her baby's constipation!

4. Swaddling the baby:

While it should, of course, be done under expert supervision, many mothers agree that swaddling a baby, which means snugly wrapping a baby in a soft cotton cloth or blanket to give him warmth and comfort. It really helps the baby settle down and many mothers say that it also calms their babies.

"I swear by swaddling at it really helped my baby keep calm and comfortable in the first few months of her life," says Heena Lulla Singh, mother of a two-year-old baby girl.

Of course, the trick here is to know the right technique and tying the baby gently so that he stays comfortable. In fact, that applies for all practices mentioned above. Never try them without expert supervision!
