Real mum confession: “I didn’t see that coming…”
We catch up with mum of two, Sonia Agarwal*, and her journey of surprises as she figures out this crazy-beautiful thing called motherhood. Presented by Baby Dove.
As mums, we want to be prepared for every possibility when our baby arrives. So, how is it that in spite of the 23,649 articles and forums we trawl through, there is always that moment in new mum-hood when it hits us: “Whoa…I did not see that coming!”
Keep reading to see what Sonia’s life as a mum has been like, and if you can relate!
Q: What were some of the things you were most surprised by when you became a mother?
A: Like most women, I was nervous about becoming a mother and worried a lot about what it would be like. I tried to prepare myself the best I could, and while I didn't read all the baby books, I definitely asked around.
Before I gave birth, I knew I might be surprised by the challenges of breastfeeding and the weird noises my newborn would make in her sleep. I heard all about the squeeze bottle I'd soon keep by the toilet.
And I was warned to get all my sleep during my last few months of pregnancy. Lack of sleep makes me crazy. Luckily, Saana* and Saafa* got into a sleeping routine sooner than I thought, but the initial 6 to 8 weeks were rough, and not getting enough sleep made me a bit irrational at times!
It's also so crucial to remember that you and your partner are on the same team and if you can stay supportive and kind when the going gets tough, things will feel a million times better.
Q: What are some of the greatest lessons you learnt from becoming and being a mother?
A: Don't try to do it all, or do it perfectly.
I remember during my first week home after giving birth to Saana, I was already trying to achieve a sense of routine and normalcy. But It was way too soon!!
When I was learning how to take care of an infant, the last thing I needed to think about was making a homemade dinner, catching up on my baking, or getting right back into shape. Those early days slip by way too quickly, and it's so important to stop and just get to know your baby. I promise that the rest will fall back into place as the time goes by.
3) What have been some of the best and worst moments in your journey of parenthood?
Breastfeeding is hard for me. Really, very hard. Even if my baby latches on right away and I don't experience any pain, it takes more time and patience than I ever could imagine. I really had no idea what commitment breastfeeding would be... from wearing nurse friendly clothing, to constantly watching what you eat and drink, it's all extremely overwhelming in those beginning stages.
It is also so strange how it takes so long to realise that you are creating a human being inside you. A lot of times it’s quite scary, especially feeling the baby move around inside you – everyone talks about how special it is, but sometimes it really hurts!
And yet, whenever Saana or Saafa moved, there was a weird sense of pride…just thinking about how their tiny limbs are growing and developing is incredible! I know it’s not supposed to be a surprise – but it’s in moments like these that it fully sinks in that I am creating another human, breathing and moving inside me. It’s the best feeling.
4) What do you think is important for taking care of your child? Have you heard about the Baby Dove launch – what do you think about it?
I have been a Dove user for many, many years myself!! Which is why I was really excited to find out that they were launching a line of Baby Dove products.
I think, in a mum’s world, where almost every morning, afternoon and evening brings a new surprise, it is nice to know that there is something out there that I can trust to give me the same results every single time. And I know that Baby Dove products are going to care for my baby’s skin the same way Dove has protected, moisturised, and nourished mine all these years.
Mums, there are no surprises (or shocks!) here – newly-launched Baby Dove’s Rich Moisture range has been built on Dove’s 60-year heritage of providing immaculate care and intense moisture for your, and your precious infant’s, skin.
