A District-level Household and Facility Survey (DLHS) of Bengaluru, revealed a shocker today. While 59 percent women opt for tubectomy, only 0.4 percent of men volunteer for permanent sterilisation in the silicon valley of India.
This is sad news because it adds to the fact that the city is known for an unrealistic gender divide when it comes to sterilisation. However, the situation is better in Karnataka. About 0.2 percent of men prefer permanent sterilisation against 57.4 percent women.
In an interview reported by The Times of India today, Rekha G, president of The Family Planning Association of India (FPAI), Bengaluru, reiterates that several women are treated as mere baby-producing machines and therefore, they are left with no option but to opt for tubectomy.
The Family Planning Association of India (FPAI), Bengaluru chapter, reportedly receives requests from 70 to 80 women for tubectomy. This is a monthly figure with hardly any man requesting for a vasectomy.
