The Parsi community, known for its declining population, has decided to adopt surrogacy as a means to up the low birth rate, reports The Times Of India.
Dr Shernaz Cama, director of Parzor, a project aimed at preserving the Parsi heritage through the Jiyo Parsi scheme, said that two Parsi women have agreed to become surrogate mothers. She was speaking on the last day of the Iranshah Udvada Utsava in Valsad on Sunday.
According to the Census, population of the Parsi community came down to 59,000 in 2011 from 69,104 in 2001.
Cama said that the decision to adopt surrogacy was taken after deliberation among the religious leaders of the community. She added that they were looking at a target of 200 births in the coming five years.
