All her teenage years, Kriti Mehra, 28, battled severe form of acne. She would often have to attend school with red spots all over her face and while she tried many home remedies nothing worked, till she turned 24.

At this age she finally somehow managed to win over it with just a few pimples appearing a week before her periods. But it was only last year when she conceived that Mehra thought she had gotten over adult acne for good.

From her first trimester onwards, she had clear glowing skin and was happy that she finally got the skin she wanted! But to her dismay, in February this year she delivered her baby girl and got all that adult acne back.

Experts term this as postpartum acne.

Cause of postpartum acne

Postpartum acne is usually caused by severe fluctuations of hormones that the body goes through immediately after the delivery. In fact, for many women the first few weeks or months post delivery could be the worst with painful pimples and whiteheads appearing across the face or even the body.

During pregnancy the estrogen levels are high, which leads to a glowing skin and complexion. But after delivery, the estrogen levels fall down and the body tries to compensate for the loss by fluctuating hormones. This is what leads to postpartum acne.

Remember that this type of acne could take upto one year to cure and needs dedicated skincare, which includes home remedies. And one of the easiest home remedies to cure acne within a few days is by using cinnamon and honey.

Caring for postpartum acne

Apart from making sure that your water intake is high and that you use clean towels to wash your face and change you pillowcase regularly, you can use this concoction one a day to get a clear skin.

This mixture is a great way to get rid of stubborn acne marks and most importantly to dry out the pimples. Here's how it works:

  • Cinnamon contains cinnamaldehyde, which contains antibacterial properties.
  • It helps to remove Propionibacterium acne and Staphylococcus epidermis, the two acne causing organisms from the root.
  • It increases blood circulation and brings oxygen and blood back to the surface of the skin.
  • It decreases any type of inflammation (even internal) and stabilizes glucose levels in the body.

When you combine the cinnamon powder with honey, the powder will work to remove the organisms and the honey will work to keep your skin moisturised and is a great antioxidant.

How to make the mask?

  • Add 1 tsp of cinnamon with 3 tsp of raw honey
  • Mix the two well
  • Apply the mixture onto your face for 20 minutes

We would advise you to check if the sensitivity level of your skin by trying this mixture onto your arm first. This must be applied three times a week for good results.
