With the cold winters upon us it’s that time of the year when new parents worry about the health of their babies and toddlers. That’s because a change in weather means the onset of cold and cough.
But a wholesome meal that can also ease digestion and keep your baby warm is the perfect solution to that problem. This type of meal can also fight infection and help your baby recover soon.
One such type of meal, which solves both these purposes is the Besan ka sheera. Yes, that’s correct!
It is an age-old dadi ka nuskha that works wonders on kids during the winters. That’s because besan (gram flour) has garam taseer and it is warm and produces heat in the body. You can start adding besan ka sheera to your six-month-old baby’s diet, since at this age toddlers can easily be introduced to solids.

Neelanjana Singh, Senior Nutritionist, PSRI Hospital, Delhi, agrees and adds, “At sixth months of age one can start feeding the child small amounts of serials such as rice cereal, broccoli suji halwa, moong dal soup, sweet potato mash, masoor dal soup, pureed khichdi, carrot mash, banana puree, carrot mash, gourd (lauki) and sweet potato pure.”
However, for the purpose of cold and cough, you can opt for besan ka sheera. It has a simple method of preparation and is also easily digested by a baby.
Ingredients:
- Besan/ gram flour- 1 tbsp
- Water – ½ cup
- Sugar- 1 tbsp
- Ghee/ butter – 1 tbsp
- Milk- 1 cup
Method:
- Fry 1 tbsp besan in 1tbsp ghee/ butter and stir continuously
- Slowly pour 1 cup milk and stir, make sure there are no lumps
- Once it’s thick, add 1 or 0.5 tbsp sugar (for 1 cup)
- Let it cool and serve warm
Advisory: While this is a tried and tested recipe, please make sure you do the allergy test for your baby if he is less than a year old as some babies have trouble digesting besan. Please consult the doctor in case you are unsure.
