Odisha's horror: Nurses attempt to deliver baby in '3 Idiots' style, end up killing it

Odisha's horror: Nurses attempt to deliver baby in '3 Idiots' style, end up killing itOdisha's horror: Nurses attempt to deliver baby in '3 Idiots' style, end up killing it

Not only did Aarti and Kalpatru Samal lost their first baby, her uterus also suffered extreme damage.

Have you seen the blockbuster movie 3 Idiots?

If you have, you may remember the scene where Aamir Khan (Rancho) tries to deliver a baby on a ping-pong table, using a vaccum cleaner. He calls his friend, Doctor Priya (played by Kareena Kapoor Khan) who then guides him through the procedure.

Well, this happened in real life in Odisha.

Except, it turned into a horrible disaster for the mother, baby as well as the nurses who were attempting the delivery.

As per reports, three nurses of Sai Hospital in Kendrapada, attempted a cesarean section on expecting mum Aarti Samal. They  coordinating the procedure by calling up Samal's specialist, Dr Rashmikant Patra.

Unfortunately, the result of this act turned into an utter horror when the baby died and Samal suffered severe damage to her uterus.

After learning of what happened inside the operation theatre, Salam's husband Kalpatru Samal rushed his baby's dead body to the Kendrapada police station and registered a complaint against the hospital.

He told India Today, "When we contacted Dr Rashmikant Patra, he asked us to get her admitted in the hospital. He informed us that he is not present in the hospital but will coordinate with the nurses for proper care once we get her admitted in the hospital. He did not arrive even when the condition of my wife got critical."

"We lost our first baby"

A shattered Samal also added that he wasn't even aware as to who was operating his wife inside the room.

"I don't know who did it but my wife was operated upon and we lost our first baby. My wife's uterus is also damaged. The nurses said that they had coordinated with the doctor over the phone and had given their 100 per cent. It is only because of their negligence of the hospital authority," shared Samal.

While the hospital is yet to respond, by the looks of it it seems like a hurried emergency cesarean, which in ideal situations is done with extreme caution. But not many people are aware of why an emergency C-sec is undertaken or why it should be.

This case highlights the need to understand the subject better.

Here's why you may need an emergency cesarean

Sometimes you may not choose a cesarean section but you may have to undergo this surgical procedure due to certain complications. These complications include the following:

  • The baby is not getting enough oxygen
  • The baby or babies are in an abnormal position
  • The labour is not progressing
  • The mother is carrying more than two babies
  • There is a problem with the umbilical cord
  • Fibroid obstruction in the birth canal
  • The mother suffers from placental insufficiency
  • The birth passage is too small and the baby is too big
  • The mother or the baby have developed a complication during the pregnancy
  • The baby’s heart beat is irregular and cannot stand a vaginal birth

However, just like any other surgical procedure, a cesarean section also has its own set of risks that affect you and your newborn. Read more about it here.
