The importance of rest for mother and baby...

The few weeks and months after having your baby are extremely important, both for the mother as well as for the baby. After nine months of nurturing your baby inside you, your body needs all the rest and care to heal it back and restore energy and fitness. Also, the first year is very crucial in determining your baby’s overall health, development and growth.

1. Care for yourself first: This may sound difficult, but the fact is, unless you are rested and healthy yourself, you will NOT BE ABLE to take care of your newborn. It is very important to catch up on sleep, even if it is in patches, and eat healthy. Munch on salads, nuts, fruits and so on through the day to keep your energy levels intact and also drink at least 4 to 5 litres of water, if not more.

2. Burp baby through the day and night: While you may not feel your baby is gaseous, it is always a good idea to keep burping your baby, after a feed and even through the day and night. This will prevent any gas build up, which can otherwise cause pain and make baby uncomfortable. Place your baby on your shoulder and hold with one arm, while using the palm of the other hand to pat baby on the back and help to burp. Keep a spit cloth on the shoulder to avoid mess.

3. Trimming the nails: You will be surprised to see how fast your baby’s nails grow especially in the first few weeks and months! While most new parents are scared to trim those tiny yet very sharp nails, it is actually very easy once you get the hang of it. The best time to cut your baby’s nails are when baby is sleeping after a bath, as the nails will be soft from the bath. Do it very carefully and slowly, and if baby wakes up, stop and do it later when baby falls back to sleep.

4. Give your baby lots of cuddle time: This is very important for your baby’s overall emotional, psychological and even physical development. Did you know that holding your baby and hugging your baby can have a very positive influence on your baby’s personality, and help him or her grow into a more sociable, kind, happy and healthy human being?
