Must-try: 5 palak recipes your kids would love!

If there is one vegetable most kids hate all over the world it has to be spinach or palak as we call it in India. And it doesn't really matter if you show them hundreds of episodes from Popeye-the sailor man, because they ain't going near that bowl of spinach.

But, this is also true that spinach is one of those few vegetables that are known as nutritional powerhouses. One bowl of spinach contains loads of iron. It is also an excellent source of vitamin K, vitamin A, vitamin C and folic acid as well as manganese, magnesium, iron and vitamin B2. It is difficult to find vegetables richer in vitamin K than spinach.

So, if you're having troubles feeding spinach to your little one, here are a few desi recipes that can come to your rescue. All these recipes contain many other tasty ingredients that would totally mask the taste of spinach and your little one would wipe off the plate in a jiffy. I've tried them for my daughter my daughter and she loved each one of them!

Dal palak

Dal palak

Packed with protein and iron, dal palak is a popular Indian staple at many households, especially in the south of India. For the recipe, you can take any dal of your choice such as tur dal, yellow moong dal, or yellow chana dal. However, it tastes best with chana daal.

The process to make it also very simple. Just add the spinach and dal together in a pressure cooker and boil. Once it's boiled, you can stir fry onion and tomato in a small pan for the tadka and add to the boiled dal. Add to it spices of your choice and serve with rice, rotis or hot paranthas.

Palak Parantha

Palak Parantha

We're sure your kids would love this. Palak paranthas make for a yummy and nutritious breakfast and are also easy to make. Boil/steam a bowl of palak and grind into a thin paste.

Take the required quantity of wheat flour and add the spinach paste along with salt to taste and a pinch of turmeric. Knead into a soft dough and make piping hot paranthas for your child for breakfast or any time during the day when he is hungry.

Tip: This dough can also be used to make yummy palak pooris.

Palak rice

Palak rice

This is one easy breezy recipe and you can try it anytime you like. The recipe to be followed is that of your usual vegetable pulav, but instead of the vegetables, you add boiled and pureed palak. Flavour with the spices of your choice and steam. Serve hot with raita/ or curd.

Palak Corn

Palak Corn

While you have been making palak paneer

all this while, spinach and corn is a tastier, healthier alternative for your child as it is more nutritious.

The recipe is to be followed that of palak paneer only, but instead of paneer you add freshly boiled corn and a little cream for extra taste. Serve with hot purees or rice.

Palak Khichdi

Palak Khichdi

This is again a very simple recipe. You just have to add spinach to your normal khichdi recipe and add the spices of your choice. Filling and nutritious at the same time, your kids would love to have it with curd or pickle.
