8 must haves for breastfeeding moms

10 Nov, 2015

Breastfeeding can be a challenging phase of the entire motherhood. We help you out by listing few must haves for breastfeeding moms

Are you well-equipped with these must-haves?

Are you well-equipped with these must-haves?

Breasts are proud makers of the healthiest fast food. Apart from the perk of being a calorie incinerator for the mother, breast milk is packed to the rafters with live cells combating viruses in infants.

Nursing is like a superpower for breastfeeding moms. With great power, comes great pain. Bleeding nipples, unclogged ducts, back aches among other issues can take the joy out of this incredible experience.

Here are some must-haves for breastfeeding moms that can help you maintain your sanity in this crazy ride of nursing. Start GALLERY.

Nursing bras

Nursing bras

These come with a flap that can easily come down, making nursing in a public place, simpler. A quality nursing bra is one which does not squeeze breasts and has an opening that offers enough room for the baby to feed. Underwire may create pressure on milk ducts.

It’s better to get measured since you are likely to have outgrown your maternity bra. Being a mom makes for doing a lot of things single-handed, this also applies to undoing the cups. Choose accordingly.

Positioning is the key when it comes to latching on. This must-have for breastfeeding moms can help you prop up the baby, especially if you’re new to nursing.

Choose the machine washable ones, since they are prone to get messy. Many come with a soft side, a firm side and padding at the back for comfort. Some pillows also allow the baby to rest at an angle that can help with reflux issues.

Burp cloths

These are must-haves for breastfeeding moms to avoid stains of the baby spit-up on clothes. Cotton muslin squares are apt for dabbing baby dribble after feeding.

A good sipper

A good sipper

It is a must-have for the breastfeeding moms since nursing can cause dehydration.

Fill the water bottle with a straw to the brim and let it be near you when you nurse. Drink preferably before you get thirsty. Sipping on cold water is also known to ease the pain, if any. If the urine is light-coloured, you are drinking enough water.

Breast pads

Breast pads

Breast pads to be worn inside nursing bras are must-haves for breastfeeding moms and working moms in particular, to absorb leaking milk. They also help keep the bra clean.

Since using paper against the skin for 24 hours is not advisable, machine washable ones are more suitable. You could alternatively use cloth diapers or even a folded sanitary napkin.

Nipple creams

Nipple creams

Feeding the baby with sore nipples can be excruciating. The pain can multiply if you have a piranha for a baby who bites while feeding.

Lanolin-based nipple creams are the perfect antidote to sore or cracked nipples. You could also buy calendula-based organic nipple creams. Since it is non-toxic, the cream need not be removed before breastfeeding.

Other remedies could be homemade butter, a few drops of extracted breast milk or fresh milk cream.

Breast pump

Sleep deprivation and mothering go hand-in-hand. If there’s anything that can let you catch those extra winks, you’d nod vigorously in agreement.

Extract milk and store it for later. This is a must-have for breastfeeding moms since it allows the father to do your job, especially in the graveyard shift. Though it’s likely to be your most expensive purchase, it can be your best friend in case of breast engorgement.

If you express breast milk regularly, an electric breast pump is a fitting and faster substitute for a manual one.

Nursing clothing

Stripping down every time you need to breastfeed can be cumbersome. Invest in nursing pieces like wrap tops, button-down and crossover tops, breast vests or nursing tank tops designed for easy and discreet breastfeeding. Head out for a stress-free evening soiree, with baby in tow.
