On July 28,2015, Prakash Bilhore along with his cousin Ram was returning from their college through Jogheshwari-Vikhroli Link Road on his bike. They met with a terrible accident because of a huge pothole that was dug on the maid road.
The accident happened on a rainy day
The pothole was invisible as it was under water due to the heavy rains. Though the pothole was dug for some construction work, there were no barricades or signs that were installed to warn passerbys.
Because of which their bike tripped over and both were tossed in the air. Prakash and Ram were immediately admitted to the Holy Spirit hospital in Andheri. While Ram survived the deadly crash, Prakash was pronounced dead on arrival.
What moved the father
Dadarao Bilhore, Prakash’s father filed a FIR but failed to get justice for his son’s death. A BMC official and TATA engineer were arrested but set free immediately.
Dadarao decided to take an initiative against this negligence. This is why he's has taken up the mammoth task of filling up potholes with his bare hands using broken paver blacks and debris from construction sites. He then stomps on the potholes to ensure that they are levelled.
Dadarao says, "My son would not have wanted this to happen to anyone else. He was a very good boy, smart, intelligent and full of life. I will continue my fight to ensure that the people whose negligence led to his death are punished. But I don't want others to suffer like I did. I want to make our streets safer."
Bilhore has filled dozens of potholes over a month or so. His genuine work may have saved several lives.
Kudos to the father and we hope and we hope that the civic officials take some action after reading this heart-wrenching story.
