Shilpa Shetty Kundra: Indian mums need to understand 3 basics of foodShilpa Shetty Kundra: Indian mums need to understand 3 basics of food

"All the mothers who are working and have a house to run should start off with a balanced meal plan"

Actor and mum Shilpa Shetty Kundra is most certainly the original urban fitness ambassador. She is known as much for her acting chops as she is known for modernising yoga and introducing the concept of lifestyle modification in urban kitchens.

In fact, it is this very change in her own lifestyle that has helped her keep the excess kilos off and maintain a glowing skin. And in her recent interview she revealed more details about how she keeps her slim figure intact, and it has nothing to do with going to the gym!

Shilpa's secret of a slim figure

Yes, that's correct. The mum of four-year-old Viaan Raj, shared that the only thing that actually helps her remain slim is perseverance and consistent workouts, something she wasn't doing before.

"Like 15 years back, I didn't know the basic difference between protein and carbs. At that time I was young and I just used to burn it out, but you turn 35, you have to start taking care of yourself," she shared adding that she then turned to yoga to help her with her back problem and she hasn't looked back since.

Yoga has helped me reach a higher target

"You know what Yoga does to you is it gives you that confidence to achieve something which is on heights. It harnesses the energy and Yoga are also about giving you will-power and if you have will-power and control on your mind, it will make you reach to a higher target, she shares.
Shetty who also has yoga CDs and a cookbook called The Great Indian Diet to her credit makes sure to workout a minimum of three times a week.
"Because I'm a mother and it's a full-time job, plus am also working and I know this for a fact that there are a lot of working women and men out there find it difficult to take out time for themselves. But I try to take out three workout days, where I workout for 45-50 minutes," she said.

She added, "There is a preconceived notion that I work out on all days in a week. I pay more attention to the way I breathe. It aligns your mind, body and soul. In the fast paced life that we lead, it's so important to just take a moment and breathe."

The doting mum also had a few pieces of advice for working mums, just as herself.

Working mums must understand the basics of food consumption

She shared, "I understand it myself being a working mother is difficult to take time out for yourself and especially when you have a younger child and you feel apologetic taking time out for yourself and that's Indian personality. All the mothers who are working and have a house to run should start off with a balanced meal plan."

She shared three most important things to remember if working mums intended on losing weight.

  • You will start dropping weight if you are eating clean and I don't mean dieting
  • Start including raw vegetables in the morning and you can snack on nuts
  • You can carry a packed lunch that you can make the previous day. It's not difficult or just carry boiled eggs.

The 41-year-old added, "I think the basic understanding of food is lacking." Well, it looks like Shetty has cracked the code for healthy eating and lifestyle modification, given that she lost a whopping 32 kilos post her delivery.

"After my baby I had put on 32 kilos and I lost it all in five weeks. Yes, I did. But maybe my Basal metabolic rate (BMR) is different from others. 21-28 days you should be able to lose 5 kilos if you eat well and incorporate some form of physical activity," she revealed.

Well, if she can do it, so can you!
