Five days after two women of their family were brutally gang-raped by a gang of seven to eight men, the men from the family want the government to allow the victims to shoot the culprits in public.
The victims, a mother and her 13-year-old daughter, say that they want the punish the rapists with their own hands and want swift justice.
“All I want is justice. I want to punish the attackers with my own hands. I don’t trust politicians. They are promising many things, but they don’t have any accountability. I want them to safeguard the future of my child,” the distraught mother told HT in Ghaziabad yesterday.
While the family would never to able to beat the trauma of the horrific incident, “an example” needs to be set for the rapists to avoid such crimes against women in the past.
What happened that horrific night
The family’s car was stopped early on Saturday morning (July 30) on the Delhi-Kanpur highway by a gang of men who were just passing by. They then tied the male members and raped the mother and daughter for three hours and later fled with cash and valuables.
“We were taken to fields and we were not allowed to raise our heads. We repeatedly pleaded them to take our belongings but to release our women but every time, they hit us with sticks, rods and hammer,” said the girls uncle.
“They even did not listen to the cries of woman and my niece… I cannot narrate the incident,” he added as he choked with emotions.
However, the family’s nightmare didn’t end there. When the shellshocked family reached a government hospital to seek medical assistance, the doctors were far from comforting.

“I had bruises all over…my daughter was bleeding…but the doctor didn’t believe us. She said we were lying about her condition,” the 35-year-old rape survivor told news channels. Instead, the teenaged girl was asked to “sit quietly in a corner” by the doctor.
“The women were already traumatised. They didn’t know how to react to the rough behaviour,” said the survivor’s brother-in-law, who witnessed the attack.
The police were no help either, alleges the family. The family was attacked at 1.30 am. When the police finally arrived, it was 5 am.
“It took us hours to convince cops to send a team. When they finally came we had to beg them to register our case, they didn’t believe us,” the cab driver’s brother said.
Media stationed outside their house
However, the family’s ordeal doesn’t end here and now they are wary of setting foot on their own house as the media is stationed there for bytes and interviews.
“I don’t know how we can face our neighbours and friends…The media is at our doorstep, people know what happened. A friend we were staying with has asked us to leave. You know what they did to my daughter…she doesn’t speak much. Either hang them or we will hang ourselves,” said the 39-year-old father of the victim, choking up while talking about his daughter.

“Only we can understand how it feels when a woman and her daughter get beaten and raped in front of your eyes. I would request the government and judiciary to allow our women to shoot the culprit in public,” said the uncle of the girl. The family said the girl has high fever and her mother is in a state of mental and physical shock.
“But we will fight it out. We want all agencies to understand our plight and we demand arrest of all those 7-8 men who assaulted our women. The girl may not be able to attend her class for months now. She is severely traumatised and shattered,” the uncle added.
Six crimes against women are reported every minute in India. While the country tightened its anti-rape laws after the 2012 Delhi gang-rape, many activists have called for stricter punishment such as a death penalty for such heinous crimes.
The crime in Bulandshahr has shocked the country and raised questions about law and order and the role of police in the state. The UP government has suspended seven policemen and set up a 300-member task force that arrested five suspects on Monday.
