Summer is here and so is the sweat, which can leave you drained out and dehydrated. However, there are many natural foods that can cool your body and also replenish it with the lost nutrients.

If you belong to Mumbai or any other part of India that experiences hot and humid summer, am sure you’ve heard about sabja seeds. Sabja seeds or tulsi seeds are commonly used during summer due to their cooling properties.

If you haven’t heard about them, am sure you must have noticed the black gel-like seeds that sit at the bottom of your milkshake. Native to India and the mediterranean regions, sabja seeds are also used in Ayurvedic medicine due to their numerous medicinal properties.

Health Benefits of Sabja Seeds

While they are definitely cool in nature, there are many other health benefits of sabja that haven’t been really talked about. Did you know one tablespoon of sabja seeds contain 21 calories, 2 grams of protein, 4 grams of carbs and 0.5 grams of fat? The seeds are also loaded with vitamins A, E, K, B vitamins, magnesium, fibre, calcium and potassium.

Here are a few health benefits of sabja seeds that you must know of:

#1 Smoothen the digestion

The fact is that sabja seeds absorb water when they are soaked in it and develop a gelatinous coating around themselves. This gelatinous coating can rev up your digestion and help regulate your bowel movements and help keep constipation away.

#2 Keep the body cool

It's a known fact that sabja seeds are natural coolants and have natural cooling properties that would help you keep cool in summer. Which is why many people add them to their juices and milkshakes in the summer months.

#3 Weight loss

As they have a natural tendency to expand when soaked in water, sabja seeds keep you full, thus aiding in weight loss. They also keep the body satiated and provide it with the required nutrients and fiber.

#4 Diabetes

Research says that sabja seeds also help in regulating blood sugar levels and are particularly good for people with diabetes. Tulsi is a known for its blood sugar lowering properties and its seeds are also useful in regulating blood sugar levels.

#5 Healthy for skin and hair

Sabja seeds are very high in vitamins, especially vitamin K and keeps our skin and hair in peak health. It is also very high in protein and iron. A small cup of this sabja seeds will almost satisfy your daily requirement of iron and protein. These seeds also store well.

How to Use them:

  • Take not more than one to two teaspoons of sabja seeds in water and soak them in a cup of water. Let them stand for 30 minutes.
  • Add them to your milkshakes, plain milk or just plain water to feel refreshed during the hot and long summer days.
