Star designer Masaba Gupta on dealing with acne for the last 14 years of her life.

All my teenage life I wished I had at least a small pimple somewhere on my face so that I can also crib and complain like my other girl pals. Never had I imagined at that time that acne would strike me unawares at an age(in my thirties), where people feel embarrassed to get pimples on their cheeks.

And though it bothered me only for a year and my face is getting clearer now, I understand how humiliating, frustrating and sometimes painful it gets when you're a woman with acne on your face.

Star designer and daughter of legendary actress Neena Gupta's daughter, Masaba suffered the same ordeal for not one, not two but fourteen years of her life and perhaps she thought it is time for her to speak about it.

In an Instagram post, Masaba wrote her story of living a life with acne and how she dealt with it. She also posted some of her pics that show how acne had taken over her face at one time, without any filters!

It really takes guts to put up a picture like that on your social media page and we can't help but applaud Masaba coz being a celebrity it must have been tough for her to talk about something that women in the limelight normally like to conceal. Here's the message that she had for other women suffering from the same problem:

"It's taken me a LOT to put up this picture. But I felt like I had to. Of course, acne is common & weight problems are common and people deal with it and get over it with time. But what do you do when your bang in the middle of it? I've had terrible acne for 14yrs and by terrible I mean, most days it looked like I had a cigarette stubbed in my face. Dark scars

"Dark scars in my face & in my head. there were days I would refuse to leave home without putting powder on my face & refused to put any lights on in the room. I've had men tell me they want to throw up when they see my face. I've run out of my house to school with concealer on my face because I couldn't take it anymore.

"So many of you must be bang in the middle of this. Some extra weight, a whole lotta acne. The truth is... you have to go with it. That also means you have to work at getting better. Better health, better skin. Better everything. It's well-being after all. Don't live with what you don't like. Punch it out of your system!

"You have to cringe when you see yourself in the mirror, cry until you choke. DO.IT.ALL. But once you're done with that you have to run your finger down all the clear, beautiful spots on you & you have to do it every single day. Brush your teeth. Practice confidence. Practice self-estéem. Practice strength. Because we all know it will be knocked out of us 3 mins after we step out of home

"Don't expect to read an article about 'beauty coming from the inside' and expect to wake up the next day feeling like your beautiful. Doesn't work like that. If beauty to you is stepping out with a face full of makeup then so be it. If it's about flaunting your scars. So be it. But when you come back home & the lights are out. And every tear has been shed with every remark that hit you. until you build your wall & you will be the biggest, bestest version of everything that has happened to you. Collect your scars & build them into something beautiful."

Keeping your skin clear

Keeping skin clear and acne-free can be quite a challenge but it has to be one step at a time. Here are a few tips that you must always keep in mind, coming from someone who dealt and fought out of it some time back:

1. Always use a safe and doctor recommended cleanser to clean your face in the morning and night before going to bed. I used the three-in-one purette cleanser from Vichy, which is easily available in India and online. Trust me, once you're using this product it more or less does the job for you and you need to apply nothing more. It's a little expensive, but nothing can be as precious as your face!

2. Do not keep on touching your pimples and scars throughout the day. It only spreads the infection.

3. Use only your dermatologist recommended cream and sunscreen every day. The more chemicals you put on your face, the worse your acne will turn out to be.

4. Think twice before using makeup when you have a breakout. I know you want to, but it will do you more harm than good.

5. If your acne is regular and doesn't go away after some time, it would be best to consult a dermatologist.

6. Lastly, don't give into the hundred natural remedies that you're told about through your friends, relatives or family members. Use only what works for you!
