7 home remedies to straighten hair naturally

26 Oct, 2015

Using hot irons and straighteners will only damage your hair with time. Know how to straighten hair at home naturally with these home remedies

Does your hair resemble a broom?

Does your hair resemble a broom?

There are days when our hair seem to have a mind of their own. Whether you comb, tie them up or try to smoothen it out, frizzy hair still behaves it’s unruly self, making hair styling a hassle.

One may then turn to using hair straighteners, hot irons or straightening serums, but not at the cost of damaging it further.

“Hair are made up of keratin and certain vitamins and minerals that give them shine and structure. Compromising on a healthy diet or subjecting them to harsh conditions makes them lose their natural moisture, thus making it unruly and brittle,” says Dr Sonal Ahuja, clinical dermatologist, Skin and Aesthetic Clinic, Navi Mumbai.

So instead of using hair hampering methods to straighten your locks, try using natural remedies that work wonders, yet treat your hair with love. We bring to you easy hacks by that will help you straighten your hair naturally.

Eggs

Eggs

Using eggs on the hair is an excellent way to restore their health. An egg mask on the hair can be whipped up with your usual hair oil or lemon. Lemon strengthens hair follicles and also acts on stubborn dandruff.

“Use egg whites to add body to the hair,” says Dr Ahuja. Use a little gentle shampoo on your hair, if you feel the eggy smell bothering you. After the wash and drying your mane, use your hairbrush and brush out your hair, scalp to end, with a firm hand.
Coconut milk

Coconut milk

Coconut milk is an excellent conditioner, and works like magic to straighten hair. Scrape out the flesh from a fresh coconut and blend it, till you get a creamy pulp. Squeeze out the milk with a bit of water. Rub this onto your scalp and hair and leave it for 20-30 minutes. Wash your hair with lukewarm water and gently dry it out for silky, straight tresses.
Aloe vera and olive oil

Aloe vera and olive oil

The thorny, succulent aloe vera is a superb natural conditioner. When mixed with olive oil, it provides extra moisture to dry hair and adds life to it. Scoop out the gel-like pulp from the thorny aloe leaf and mix it with a teaspoon of olive oil. Apply this to the entire length of the hair and wash with cold or lukewarm water.
Beer

Beer

“Beer is an unusual but excellent hair conditioner that helps in hair straightening,” informs Dr Ahuja. Pour about a pint beer little by little over your hair after you complete your shampooing ritual.
Milk and honey

Milk and honey

You may feel a bit uncertain about using honey on your hair, but it is one of the best ways to soften and straighten hair naturally. Mix a teaspoon of honey to half a cup of milk and witness remarkably straight and silky hair.
Yogurt

Yogurt

Yogurt not only nourishes your hair, it also strengthens it. The lactic acid and zinc in yogurt provides adequate moisture and nourishment to the hair, making it silky straight. Make a pack of yogurt with lemon juice and run your fingers through the hair. Gently wash with lukewarm water.
Almond oil

Almond oil

If there’s one way to pamper your hair to the fullest, give it some almond oil. It is packed with vitamin E and magnesium, both crucial to build damaged hair. Warm up some almond oil and rub it onto your hair, with downward strokes. Tie your hair up with a warm towel and then wash up with a gentle shampoo.

Whenever you try these home remedies, make sure you do not subject your hair to hot water or long periods of blow drying. “Heat rips the effects of conditioning and nullifies the effect that the straightening treatment has on the hair,” warns Dr Ahuja.
