After learning that the bread you eat every day might be laden with chemicals, here's another news that might shock you. Reports now claim that there are artificial eggs available in the market, especially in Kerela.
These eggs are hard to crack, are rubbery and very chewy to eat. What's surprising is that they don't even rot easily and last quite a few days on the shelf without spoiling. Unlike normal eggs "artificial eggs" are brown in colour and do not attract flies and do not rot even after cooking or leaving them out in the open.
While the sale of eggs in Kerela hasn't stopped yet, the state Health Minister, K K Shylaja says that an investigation would be launched soon to find out the mystery behind these eggs.
"I will now ask the Food Safety Commissioner to seriously look into these media reports that such a product is available. It would be nice if someone comes up and provides a sample of it so the tests can be conducted quickly," said
Shylaja.
How they were discovered
One consumer bought eggs which he thought were normal, but was quoted as saying they were extremely hard to crack and that the contents turned rubbery on being put on the stove, according to a Gulf News report.
"The samples collected by food safety department from Thiruvananthapuram and Ernakulam had deformity . The yolks could not maintain consistency in shape once they were frozen. Most of these eggs might be frozen during transportation and hence the change in shape," said George T Oommen, director of the Centre of Excellence in Meat Science and Technology (CEMST).
Distributors, on the other hand, say that the consignment has come from Tamil Nadu but the exact origin of the eggs is yet to be traced.
How to spot a stale egg
Here are three simple ways to spot a stale egg:
1.Place all the eggs that you have bought from the market in a bowl and see how many of them float and how many settle down. The eggs that float are stale and ones that settle down at the bottom are fresh.
2. Eggs that are fresh will have cloudy whites and their yolks would be thick and will not break. Stale egg yolks, on the other hand, will break easily.
3. A fresh egg will not make a sloshing sound when shaken, whereas a stale egg would. This is because the yolk and egg whites begin to shrink and there is a large air pocket that allows them to move.
