9 unique and fun math games for kids you must try out

5 Nov, 2015

Teaching little ones math can be a daunting task. We help you with this list of fun math games for kids

??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

There seems to be no middle ground for math. Kids either love it or hate it. There’s something about those numbers that can leave them either exhilarated in the way it all adds up, or downright confused and on the verge of tears.

Growing up doesn’t mean these issues go away. We learn to deal with them better and for those of us who never got along well with numbers, we whip out our big calculators and feel smug that we don’t have to worry about the tiny details of where those numbers need to go.

What then when it comes to helping your child with math homework? Fair enough if you and numbers were the best of friends; but what if they swim around in confusing circles for your child?

Either way, learning to have fun with numbers can never be a bad thing. In fact, if any kind of learning is made fun, no child will ever dread the idea of school or homework. There are a host of fun math games for kids which can make learning a fun experience for both you and your child. Start GALLERY.

Missing marbles

Missing marbles

Use marbles or any small object to help your kid learn to quickly solve addition and subtraction. Count out 5 to 20 marbles (depending on age) then hide some of the marbles and have your kid calculate how many of them are missing.

To make things more challenging gradually introduce one or two additional objects to the game.

Who wants to be a Mathionaire?

Who wants to be a Mathionaire?

Based on and similar to the format of television show Kaun Banega Crorepati, this free online math game has a set of math sums for questions each with an increasing amount of money to be won. Even the lifelines are similar, phone a friend, 50-50 and audience poll.
Fun with colours

Fun with colours

Collect a bunch of toys and objects of different colours and make your child to segregate them by colour. Have them add up the number of items in each colour category and then arrange the groups in ascending order, starting with the group with the minimum items to the colour with most objects.

Ready, set, go!

Ready, set, go!

This is a fun math game for your child that you both can play. Write different numbers (depending on age) on slips of paper, fold them and put them in a bowl. You both can take turns removing one.

Have a pen and sheet of paper ready, set a timer for a minute and see how many ways you both can arrive at the number using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Dress up math

Dress up math

Another fun online math game that your little girl should specifically enjoy. This game lets a child play dress up with a selection of clothes in a different price range. They can dress the figure any way they like as long as they can match the budget provided. The budget for the clothes changes with levels of difficulty.
Uno cards

Uno cards

Use your Uno cards to play a fun game of a different kind. Split the pack of cards into two and arrange them in two neat piles. In between the two piles, place a piece of paper and write on it the symbol for either addition, subtraction or multiplication.

Place another piece of paper on the right side of the pack on the right with the symbol of equal to on it. Now, simply flip the cards on both stacks and have your child solve the sum.

Guess the number

Guess the number

This is a fun math game to play with a group of children.

Write a number between 1 to 100 and have the children try to guess it in turns. Each time someone makes a wrong guess, you must tell them if that number is higher or lower than the secret number. They can keep taking turns till someone guesses the number.

Geometric shapes

Geometric shapes

Collect building clocks in a variety of shapes – squares, pyramids, rectangles, cylindricals, spheres. Let your child take his time examining and feeling them. Discuss them with him, point out distinguishing features.

Then place all the blocks in a bag. Name a shape you would like him to retrieve and have him search through the bag with his eyes closed, relying on only his hands to identify the shape.

Mixing colour drops

Mixing colour drops

If your child is a more visually inclined learner, then adding colours to a game of math will make it more fun for him.

Take a clear glass with some water and start adding drops of different colour dyes (or food colouring). Give him a sheet of paper and ask him to keep tabs on how many colours of which dyes are used to create certain colours. Then have him solve how many drops of which colours would be needed to recreate some of those colours.
