There’s a surprising new pill that has taken American women by storm, which is quite strangely made from cannabis or medical marijuana (yes, really!).

American women are swapping ibuprofen and hot water bottles with marijuana pills (suppositories), which they are inserting inside their vagina to ease menstrual pain.

The products, which look strikingly similar to tampons, are called Foria Relief and contain cocoa butter, which is mixed with tetrahydrocannabinol (known as THC) and cannabidiol (CBD).

And, yes it does banish period pain without making you high. The medically approved suppositories are only available in American states as of now as marijuana has been legalised for medical use in the US.

How it works

A statement issued by the company on its website says— “Hand-crafted from the female flower of the marijuana plant- one of the oldest known plant aphrodisiacs and analgesics in the world- using modern extraction techniques for optimal potency and purity. Each serving contains formulated blend of THC and CBD, cannabinoids which relax muscles and release tension and cramping in the body. Through the use of a suppository these antispasmodic and pain-relieving properties go directly into the area in need of relief.”

The founder of the product Mathew Gerson said while speaking to the Huffington Post, “This plant medicine has a long, cross-cultural history of use as a natural aide in easing symptoms associated with menstruation. The pelvic region contains more cannabinoid receptors than any other part of the body except for the brain. So delivering these actives in a suppository format is a natural choice.”

While these suppositories will surely not be available in India any time soon, they highlight the way medical marijuana can benefit the medical world if its effects are as long-lasting as stated by scientists.
