What should you do if your child likes your spouse better than you?

3 min read
What should you do if your child likes your spouse better than you? What should you do if your child likes your spouse better than you?

When it comes to their parents, kids definitely play favorites.

Now, if you're not your child's favorite parent, it doesn't necessarily mean that they don't like you, it could be that they're just closer to your spouse, or they have similar interests, so your child naturally prefers their company.

However, this doesn't mean that you should no longer try to build a better relationship with your child. In fact, you should use it as an opportunity to develop a deeper bond with your child.

1. Don't make it into something negative

If you notice that your child tends to prefer being with your spouse, rather than you, then don't worry about it. It's normal behavior, and just because your child has a preferred parent, doesn't mean that your child loves you any less.

You should instead be happy that your child has a great relationship with your spouse, and you should use this as an opportunity to bring yourself closer to your child.

2. Try to understand where your child is coming from

Sometimes, there are a number of factors why you're not your child's favorite parent. Maybe you just have different interests, it could be that they're afraid of you, or maybe you don't spend enough time with them.

Think about what you can do to bring you and your child closer to each other. Ask them about their interests, or what their hopes and dreams are. Make it a point to get closer with your child.

3. Make sure to have enough time for your child

Just as important is to have enough time to spend with your child. Your work is very important, since it helps you provide for your family, but spending quality time is also important when it comes to being close with your child.

Make it a point to be there for your child, especially during the important moments in their life, and prioritize spending time with them instead of focusing too much on work.

4. Make a schedule with your kids

To help you when it comes to finding time to spend with your kids, it's a great idea to make a schedule that you can follow.

Kids find it easier when there's structure in the things that they do, so having a routine that you can do with your child would make them feel much closer with you.

5. It's all about love

At the end of the day, the most important thing would be to show your child how much you love and care about them. It shouldn't matter who their favorite parent is, you just need to love them just the same.

It might hurt to find out that your child prefers to be with your spouse rather than you, but it shouldn't affect how you love your child. Your love should be unconditional, and the most important thing would be to have a deep connection with your child.

After all, you're still a parent, and it's up to you to make sure that your child grows up as a loving, kind, and respectful human being.
