What should you do if your child catches you and your spouse 'doing the deed'?

4 min read
What should you do if your child catches you and your spouse 'doing the deed'?What should you do if your child catches you and your spouse 'doing the deed'?

So, you're getting down and dirty with your husband, when suddenly, your little one walks in the room! What's a mom to do?

So, you've finally tucked the kids in to bed, finished all of the work you need to do for the day, and now it's time for you and your husband to have a romantic moment to yourselves.

But suddenly, while you're both in the heat of the moment, one of your kids walk into your room, and sees you and your husband doing the deed! How would you handle such an awkward situation?

Use the locks on your doors!

What's a good way of dealing with such a situation? Well, the best way of dealing with an awkward moment with your kids would be to prevent it in the first place!

You might be used to not locking your doors, especially if you have a baby who mostly just sleeps and crawls around. But once your child gets older, they eventually want to explore the different parts of your house, including you and your husband's room, so it's important that you lock the doors in order to avoid any 'surprise visits' from your child.

What if you forget to lock the door?

Now let's say that for one reason or another, you forgot to lock the door, or your child might have opened it somehow. How would you talk about it to your child?

Of course, the first thing to do would be to get dressed first! It'd be awkward talking to your child while both you and your husband are stark naked. Once you get dressed, take a moment to calm yourself down, to collect and compose your thoughts.

If your child is pretty young, then chances are, they won't really understand what happened, so it'll be relatively easy to just tell your child that you and your husband were 'hugging' because you love each other so much.

What if it's an older kid you ask? Well, the best approach would be to talk about it in a mature way. Chances are, older kids will most likely know about sex, or at least have an idea about it. Be honest with your child, but don't provide any additional information, unless they ask. Don't make things complicated, or use any new words with your child.

You can also opt to talk to your child a couple of days after the incident, to help clear things up, or to ask them if they have any questions that they want t ask. Talking about sex while your child is young is important so that they don't get the wrong idea of sex from their friends, movies, or even the internet.

Don't make a big deal out of it

Either way, you shouldn't try and make a big deal out of what happened. Don't make your child feel that he or she made a mistake, or that sex is something that's wrong or something to be ashamed about.

Tell them that it's normal for mommies and daddies to do it, and it's a way of how they show their love for each other.

Here's a short run down of what you need to keep in mind:

  • Rule number 1: Always lock your doors!
  • Don't make it into a big deal. Your child might feel embarrassed, and you don't want that.
  • If you're caught, keep calm, and think about what to say first.
  • For younger kids, keep it simple and straightforward.
  • For older kids, address any questions they have, and be honest with your explanations.
  • Make sure your child knows that they did nothing wrong by walking in, and that it's all an accident.
