Arvind Swamy-starrer Dear Dad that released last Friday is that rare Bollywood film that focuses on a father-son relationship in an industry that has always favoured stories depicting the more expressive and emotional female parent.

#2 Mughal-e-Azam (1960)

The epic historical drama essentially traced the war between a father and son over a court dancer. With collections of Rs 6 crore, it broke all box office records at the time of release and remained the highest-grossing Hindi film for the next 15 years.

#3 Shakti (1982)

Veteran actors Dilip Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan came together to play father and son in the Ramesh Sippy-directed action crime drama. The film made about Rs 6 crore at the box office and won Kumar several best actor awards that season, though Bachchan was also nominated in the same category.

Akshay Kumar plays an irresponsible and aspiring actor son to Amitabh Bachchan who plays a dying father. The Vipul Shah film, also starring Priyanka Chopra and Shefali Shah, earned more than Rs 5 crore at the box office.

Ram Gopal Varma’s crime drama inspired from Hollywood classic The Godfather featured Amitabh and Abhishek Bachchan in title roles. The film made more than Rs 28 crore at the box office.

Vikramaditya Motwane’s coming-of-age drama on the relationship of a young teenager with his abusive father featured Rajat Barmecha and Ronit Roy in lead roles. The film was officially selected to compete in the Un Certain Regard category at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival, but only managed about Rs 5 lakh at the box office.
