In a first, Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao share their personal journey through surrogacy!

"A lot of women and a lot of families have trouble conceiving. And this is so depressing and so debilitating that it affects you in many other ways," shares Kiran Rao

Just days after celebrity parents thrashed the surrogacy bill, power couple Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao shared their emotional and fulfilling journey of becoming parents, thanks to surrogacy.

Featuring on the popular television series, The Tara Sharma Show, the couple were interviewed by actor and mum, Tara Sharma on the various aspects of their struggles with conception.

"Being a parent is one of the biggest joys"

Beginning with a heartfelt thanks to their Mumbai-based doctor and IVF specialist Dr Firuza Parikh, Aamir Khan said, "Dr Firuza is one of the most amazing people that I’ve met. And she has made such a big difference in people’s lives."

"Being a parent is one of the biggest joys that you can experience in life. Unfortunately, there are a lot of us who are unable to have a child for various reasons, maybe medical reasons. And to give these people hope and to bring joy in their lives, in the form of a child through IVF, or surrogacy is something that has really impacted lives. So the work she has done is commendable, she is really brought joy to so many lives," he added.

Reiterating her pivotal role in their lives, wife Kiran Rao shared more candid details of the couple's struggle.

"Not being able to conceive can be depressing"

"A lot of women and a lot of families have trouble conceiving. And this is so depressing and so debilitating that it affects you in many other ways. It affects your confidence, it affects your ability to be positive and (we felt that) Dr Firuza has the ability to give you a sense of comfort," says Rao, 42.

She added that it was Dr Firuza who helped the couple feel comforted when they most needed to be.

"She is a caregiver and she has a sense of balance about things and a sense of comfort. I really appreciate that because at that time when you are going through IVF and you are doing all of that and you are fraught with so much stress, you need that person so you feel that everything will be fine," she said.

Speaking candidly about her miscarriages, Rao said that her doctor not only comforted her, but also gave her an insight into what would work for them.

"When I had one of my later miscarriages, she actually said that, the DNA testing we do doesn’t even touch the tip of the iceberg, the body has a sense of what is not right. And (that in itself) is far greater knowledge then any testing we can do. So if the baby has been miscarried, then the body has realised it is an unfit pregnancy. So it would be wrong to try and force your body to have it," she said.

While thanking their doctor Dr Firuza and her husband Dr Rajesh, the celeb couple shared their frightening journey of the many ups and downs through surrogacy.

"It was also quite frightening because of the media glare"

"Rajesh and Firuza make an incredible couple because for the two of us, embarking on something not just unusual but something that was also quite frightening because of the media glare we are surrounded by and the newness of what we were doing. And how it would be perceived! So Rajesh was a great support to us," she said.

Explaining how Dr Rajesh helped them understand surrogacy she said, "He helped us understand how you deal with surrogacy and how you deal with assistive reproduction. This (knowledge) makes a huge difference to whoever is at the receiving end of that information," said Rao.

She further added that when they finally decided to share with the world, their decision to have Azad via surrogacy, their doctors were with them.

"When we decided to tell everybody how Azad was born, Dr Rajesh helped us through all the stages. Right when we started, the decision for surrogacy, every meeting that we had with lawyers, we always had Firuza and Rajesh there to tell us what it is that we should do," she said.

Rao added that this was not just necessary from a legal point of view, but also from an emotional point of view.

"Tusshar Kapoor has shown so much courage"

Winding up their conversation with a personal message for actor and new single dad Tusshar Kapoor, Khan said, "Tusshar is an amazing guy and he has shown so much courage and strength, dignity and grace; in being very open about the fact that he had a child and this is how he would like to have a family."

"He will be such an inspiration to so many other single parents so hats off to him," he said.
