Another day and another shocker from the national capital. This time the victim is a 24-year-old new mother.
A resident of Vikaspuri, the 24-year-old Parvinder Kaur was reportedly set ablaze by her own husband and in-laws, after she failed to meet their escalating dowry demands.
She was found by the police when they received a phone call about a woman being set on fire. They reached the spot to find Kaur lying next to some charred clothes as well as a few buckets.
"She was set on fire by her husband and in-laws"
The police then rushed her to the Safdarjung Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries. But right before she died, in her last statement Kaur named her in-laws as well as her husband as the culprits and added that they harassed her for dowry.
A police official told Times of India, "In her statement, the victim alleged that she was set on fire by her husband and in-laws over dowry demands. Consequent to her statement, we filed a case under Indian Penal code Section 388 (extortion by threat), 302 (murder) and 34 (act done by several person)."
Based on her statement, the police arrested her husband Gurcharan Singh (27), her brother-in-law Prabhjot Singh (25), as well as her father-in-law Rawel Singh (62).
Kaur married for love marriage but was only given torture!
Incidentally, Kaur and Singh had a love marriage in 2012, but soon after the arrival of their son her in-laws started demanding dowry.
Kaur's brother Amandeep Singh told the media, "Everything was fine until their son was born four years ago. After that, her husband's family started demanding money from her. We tried to meet their demands."

He added that even though they tried to keep up with the demands, they couldn't at times. And during those times, kaur would suffer torture and harassment at the hands of her in-laws.
In fact, the torture became so much that just 15 days before her alleged murder, Kaur's family had lodged a dowry harassment case against her in-laws.
Kaur was attacked went she went to her sasural to collect her items
This promoted the angry in-laws to send her back to her parents' home. However, since she had her clothes and basic items still at her in-laws, she went back to collect them.
That's when they saw the opportunity and burnt her alive by dousing her in kerosene. When some people (presumably neighbours and relatives) tried to save Kaur, they were also attacked by her in-laws.
This grim incident marks another one on the long list dowry deaths in our country.
Educated girls are dying because of dowry demands!
From educated PhDs to CAs, girls are dying at the hands of greedy in-laws.
Inspite of stringent laws and orders by the Supreme Court to treat daughters-in-law like family and not housemaids, many women continue to face the wrath of greedy in-laws.
As per the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), in 2015 "as many as 7,634 women died in the country due to dowry harassment," quoted a daily. And as per Delhi Police, as many as 31 women died of dowry harassment only in the national capital.
We only ask this, when will the society wake up and understand the value of daughters?
