If you just had a winter baby and are busy packing him in layers, you’re probably reminiscing about the times your parents did the same to you. Packing you into several layers and keeping you warm was their priority, as is yours, now.

As a new parent to a winter baby, your biggest concern is protecting your little one from the harsh weather. Winters demand a lot of special care for the newborn. But it’s not all that difficult, once you know what to do.

Here are some tips to protect your infant during his first winters.

Breastfeeding your newborn

Breastfeeding your newborn

The best way to enhance the immunity of your little one (even for future) is breastfeeding during winters. You must continue breastfeeding your baby for at least six months, since its beneficial for your child’s overall health and wellbeing.

Dressing like an onion

Dressing like an onion

It is better to dress your little one layer by layer, rather than put on one heavy outfit. Add mittens, socks and cap to the attire. If you see the cheeks of your baby getting red, it may be due to an increase in body temperature because of layers on the body. If so, remove a layer right away.

Infants are more prone to frostbites. So keep an eye on the colour of your baby’s skin so that you can take an action immediately.

Heavy blankets are not needed

Sounds weird, but it’s true. You may want to tuck your baby in heavy and cosy blankets during the winter season. Make him wear comfortable and warm clothes and that should be enough. Surrounding him with pillows and heavy quilts or blankets in the crib would have adverse effects.

Give him a massage for blood circulation

Massaging your newborn during winters helps in improving blood circulation as well as boosts immunity. Olive oil, almond oil or coconut oil is recommended for regular skin. However, if you observe any rashes or change in skin texture, do not wait to consult your pediatrician right after the first massage.

Give the massage an hour or two before the bath. You can even massage your baby before the bedtime for a better sleep.

Keep your hands clean

Winters can make the baby susceptible to cold and flu. So, it is essential to wash your hands frequently or use a hand sanitizer often during the day. This will prevent germs from being passed on to your little one.

Request your visitors who come to see your kid, to use sanitizer, whether or not they are touching the baby.

Say NO to lot of baby products

Say NO to lot of baby products

Cold and dry weather often leads to dry skin and lack of moisture. New parents often become too conscious and land up using excess of baby products, whether it be shampoos, moisturizers, oils or washes.

A simple water bath is enough for the new born at times. Use a mild soap once a week. Milk bathing once in a week also helps in avoiding any kind of skin allergy.

Keep a humidifier

Keep a humidifier

You might have installed a blower or heater in your newborn’s room to control the room’s temperature. But, it is equally important to have a humidifier in your room. This will maintain the humidity levels in your room and thus, prevent in from snatching away moisture from your baby’s skin.

Give exposure to sunshine

Make sure you give ample sunshine to the newborn on sunny days, especially during winters. It helps in synthesizing vitamin D in your baby’s skin. This component is highly important for bones to gain strength.

Eat boiled eggs

Boiled eggs bring warmth in mother’s body and passes on the same if she is breastfeeding. Being a lactating mother, make a routine to have at least two boiled eggs daily. This will help in maintaining the body temperatures of your little one too.
