An 80-year-old woman is tortured and hung upside down from the ceiling by her OWN son!An 80-year-old woman is tortured and hung upside down from the ceiling by her OWN son!

It also came into light that once they would hang their 80-year-old mother to the fan, they would switch on the fan and let her mercilessly rotate with it

In a news that will make you question your own conscience, an 80-year-old Mumbai mum was allegedly brutally tortured by her own son, daughter-in-law and granddaughter.

The trio tied the octogenarian with a bedsheet and hung her upside down from a ceiling fan.

The police came in the know of this horrible incident when a video of their act, which the trio recorded themselves, started doing the rounds of the Internet. The police were then informed by those who saw this act and the trio was arrested.

Unfortunately, it also came into light that once they would hang the woman to the fan, they would switch on the fan and let her mercilessly rotate with it. The police told Deccan Chronicle that the old lady was being tortured this way for the past three years!

"We have arrested Surendra, his wife Babita (43) and their daughter Akshaya (19)," the police informed the media.

Why were they torturing their own mother?

While you may think that the trio is deranged to torture their own mother, they reportedly told the police that in fact, it was their mother who was mentally ill and would often walk out of the house. They used this as a scare tactic to keep her inside the house.

Thankfully, the 80-year-old lady was rescued by the police and is currently under their care.

But this horrifying news brings to light an important question, "Have our kids become merciless? Is there a greater need to teach them about caring for others?"

Continue reading to see why its important for kids to learn empathy and how can start right away.

Teaching kids to care

Even though the woman was staying with her own son and his family, it did not stop them from abusing and torturing her. Incidents like this one puts an even greater emphasis on the need to teach our kids to be more compassionate.

And if you are wondering how to do that from a very early stage, here are a few pointers:

  • Teach empathy: It is imperative that you teach your kid the ability to understand how others feel. Help them develop empathy by telling them how for instance, an animal would feel if somebody kicked it. Encourage them to name their feeling and the feeling of others.
  • Lead by example: The best way to teach kids is to always lead by example. When you do household chores involve you kid by simply asking them to see how its' done. This helps them become more independent and confident in the tasks that they take up themselves and also care about the activities they are involved in.
  • Make them responsible: Assign responsibilities to your kids by giving them chores around the house. If you have more than one child, you can ask the older child to look after his/her younger sibling, thereby, helping them understand responsibility and care.
  • Perform an act of kindness: Apart from making them more responsible and independent, also make sure that you perform an act of kindness whenever possible in front of them. They will learn to help others quickly, if you do the same.
  • Use your gift: Every person is unique and has a unique gift. For instance, some are good at creative work, others maybe good at field work. Whatever your forte, teach your kid to use his/her gift to help others in need.
