Plants that drive mosquitoes away!

As dusk sets in, most of us frantically close the windows and turn on various mosquito repellent devices. But, could there be a more natural way to deal with those unwanted guests? The answer lies in our kitchen garden. Nature has it's own insect repellents which are said to be more effective than the chemical ones.

"The fragrance and alkaloids present in certain plants are repulsive to mosquitoes," says Vijaya Chakravarthy, an experienced ecologist and landscape consultant. "The best part is, these plants are easily available and make a pretty garden arrangement," she adds.

This shrub may look ordinary, but it is a silent warrior at work. “The milky secretion from this plant is toxic to mosquitoes and hence drives them away," explains Chakravarthy. The best part about the milk bush is that it needs very less water to thrive and can be easily maintained.
