What your kids drink directly affects their calorie intake, and therefore, it is important that you add healthy, nutritious and tasty drinks into their daily diet. So the next time you head to the supermarket, do not be enticed by cleanly lined aisles of ‘best’ drinks for kids. Some of the best drinks are actually easily available in your house.

Don’t believe us? Check out these 10 health drinks you must give your children that you can easily prepare in the comfort of your own home.

Water

Water

This is the healthiest of all the drinks. Encourage your child to consume at least 10 glasses of water a day. It will keep him hydrated and raise his energy level. If your kids do not drink 10 glasses of plain water, you can add few slices of lemon with ice cubes, to add a little bit of flavour.

Why: It’s sugar-free, calorie-free, additive free and fat-free. Most importantly, it removes toxins from the body, promotes healthy skin, helps to fight infection, reduce weight and promotes a healthy heart. The best part of this health drink is that your kid can have it anytime of the day!

Soymilk

Soymilk

Many kids tend to run away when they are asked to take soymilk. It’s perhaps got to do with its flavor that must be developed with time. However, you should try to include it your child’s daily diet.

Why: Soymilk is a rich source of calcium and vitamin D, both of which help in building stronger bones. Soybeans contain vegetable proteins, which reduce the loss of calcium from the kidneys. This means that your child would not have a very little chance of developing osteoporosis in the future.

Coconut water

Coconut water

This is certainly one of the best health drinks for your child since it will keep him hydrated during summers and supply him with ample amount of energy. It will also keep his heart healthy so he can play all that he wants if he consumes a minimum of two glasses a day.

Why: The essential nutrients in coconut water include potassium, magnesium, vitamin C and anti-oxidants, which collectively help in improving blood circulation, supplying energy, burn fat and improve skin.

Homemade fruit juices

Homemade fruit juices

Homemade fruits juices earn more brownie points than the packaged fruits juices. One can choose from the wide variety, which includes watermelons, mangoes, oranges, kiwis and many more. They are fresh and healthy and will keep your child energized. You can give your child one glass of juice everyday.

Why: Fresh juice has anti-oxidant properties and they also aid in digestion. Since juice is easily absorbed and digested as compared to a whole fruit, it is beneficial in detoxification.

Lemonade

Lemonade

On a tiring hot summer day, you can give kids some nimbu paani or lemonade. It’s a very refreshing drink and also lends energy to the body.

Why: Lemon is a citrus fruit that contains a high amount of vitamin C. Studies conducted at American Urological Association, highlights that lemonade eliminates the occurrence of kidney stones. This energy drink forms a urinary citrate, which prevents the formation of crystals in the kidney.

Buttermilk

Buttermilk

Popularly known as chaas, buttermilk is another refreshing summer drink. It is quite popular across India, and in some cultures it’s traditionally served after the meal. So you can give your child one glass of buttermilk, especially during summers.

Why: You can prepare buttermilk by adding spices to whisked curd and it will work as a great hydrant and aid in digestion. It is also known to combat acidity, something your child might need after a junk food binge.

Jaljeera

Jaljeera

It is one of the most popular homemade drinks in India, and a favourite among children. Known for its tangy and zesty flavours, jaljeera keeps the body hydrated and adds a little zing to the taste buds.

Why: It reduces extra heat produced from inside the body and flushes out the toxins from the body. It also aids in digestion.

Lassi

Lassi

Another popular drink for kids, this sweet yogurt drink is not only healthy, but its taste leaves you wanting more. Made of curd, it is quite popular in North India and is often served as an accompaniment to evening snacks.

Why: Since it’s made of curd and is full of calcium, proteins, carbohydrates, vitamin A and vitamin B, it aids in digestion.

Almond milk

Almond milk

If your kids are not allergic to nuts, almond milk could be extremely beneficial to their health. It is a rich source of proteins and essential nutrients, and is necessary in a child’s overall growth.

Why: It contains fibre and is a low fat drink. Since it contains vitamin E, which contains anti-oxidant properties, it can help improve your child’s skin health. It contains plenty of vitamin B, which is necessary for muscle growth and healing.

Smoothies

Smoothies

This would probably be your child’s favourite drink. Whether it be a banana smoothie, strawberry smoothie or grapefruit smoothie, every child loves a dollop of yogurt, sugar and fresh juicy fruit. Not only are smoothies known for their taste, they are also packed with healthy nutrients and vitamins.

Why: Fruits are an essential part of smoothies and they are also organically packed with essential nutrients and vitamins. Mixed with dairy, they can benefit a child’s overall health.
